Where the Roadster Meets the Wrist: Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series

Hello petrolhead, “Porsche for Porsche Design” is an initiative in which the Porsche automobile company collaborates with the Porsche Design studio, to produce personalized, custom-made items for the brands’ enthusiasts. The latest product to emerge from this concept is the Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series — a limited-edition wristwatch offered to owners of the iconic 911 Turbo S sports car

Both the watch and the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series automobile (0-200 km/h in 9.6 seconds, maximum speed of 330 km/h, with exclusive power kit delivering 27 HP more power output than a standard 911 Turbo S) will be limited to 500 pieces, and will be delivered to buyers simultaneously. The timepiece bears the aesthetic influence of the car, as well as a number of familiar elements found in Porsche Design watches. Its 42-mm case is made of lightweight titanium and finished with a black carbide coating. It has a screw-down crown and a convex sapphire crystal with exceptional scratch-proofing and antiglare properties, and features a racing-inspired tachymeter-scale bezel.

Under the sapphire crystal is a dial that incorporates the carbon fiber strips used in the 911 Turbo S and is finished with the same lacquer paint as the car. Featuring hands coated with white Super-LumiNova, the dial has a central chronograph hand, a 30-minute chronograph subdial at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour subdial at 6 o’clock, a date window at 4 o’clock, and a “function indicator” — a device also found on Porsche Design’s new Monobloc Actuator watch — at 9 o’clock. In the pursuit of maximum personalization, Porsche Design offers the watch with six different dial highlight colors: Golden Yellow Metallic, Carrara White Metallic, Agate Grey Metallic, Black, Guards Red, and Graphite Blue Metallic.

Inside the case, ticking under a sapphire window in the screwed caseback, is the self-winding Caliber Werk 01.200, an in-house movement equipped with a flyback chronograph mechanism, which Porsche Design says required three years to bring to fruition. Like the case, the movement, which has 25 jewels, a 48-hour power reserve, and a 28,800 vph (4 Hz) frequency, melds watchmaking expertise with techniques from the world of state-of-the-art vehicle construction. The barrel bridges feature cutout that display the chronograph’s flyback function as well as gear trains. As per Porsche Design timepiece tradition, the major movement parts are in matte black; the bridges, plates, and polished screws are chrome-plated. Its energy-optimized rotor, made partially of tungsten, is inspired by an alloy wheel with “wheel rims” accented in gold or black and attached to the main movement by a central locking emblazoned with the Porsche coat-of-arms. Another significant achievement: Porsche Design’s first in-house caliber is certified as a chronometer by COSC.

The Porsche Design Chronograph Turbo S Exclusive Series watch is delivered with both a black carbide-coated titanium bracelet and a perforated calfskin leather strap with seams that match the watch’s color highlights. A tool to change the bracelet size is also included.
